The Incentive research foundation recently released their study on Incentive Travel Destination Preferences & their Impact on Motivation. According to the report, the outlook for the recovery of Incentive Travel looks promising as interest in incentive travel as a motivating sales reward has never been higher.

The study also indicates that the appeal of group incentive travel is especially strong among Sales Professionals represented in the study. The percentage of Sales Professionals who found group incentive to be “extremely” or “very motivating” rose from 81% in 2021 to 92% in 2022. While the data suggests that group incentive travel is a universally appealing option, there was even more of an interest in the appeal for individual travel options as 96% of the respondents found it to be “extremely” or “Very Motivating”, up 12% YoY.

Most Important qualities of an incentive Trip

One of the questions asked was to rate what the qualities respondents found most important when on an incentive travel trip. Respondents found that “Being given ample time to relax” was ranked as most important on the list, with 89% saying it was ‘extremely’ or ‘somewhat important, followed by “Being able to take someone else on the trip”, “having the trip offer luxury accommodations and experiences”, and “being provided spending money to cover out-of-pocket expenses.”

Both in 2021 & 2022 however the 3 most important aspects among respondents was being able to take someone on the trip, Being able to invite a spouse/significant other/friend along, going to an appealing destination as well as having additional expenses covered either by an all-inclusive package or by being given additional spending money.

Preferences for trip experiences

The top 3 ranked destination experiences for 2022 where Beach/sunshine experience, Adventure travel & Mountain Experience. Even though these top experiences ranked similar in 2021, there were multiple experiences that shifted significantly in 2022, for example visiting a wellness spa, which ranked near the bottom of preferred experiences in 2021, moved up to rank fourth overall. Cruising, which ranked last as a preferred experience in 2021, rose significantly in rankings in 2022. Visiting larger metropolitan areas also showed an increase when compared to 2021. These shifts are indicative of the easing of safety concerns among the general population and that people are becoming more comfortable with crowds.

Ideal Length of an Incentive Trip

When it came to the length of the incentive trip, the ideal length among 50% of the respondents was between 4-6 days’. Only 8% preferred a trip lasting 1-3 days. Cvent data showed that 23% of trips are currently planned for three days or less.

Destination Preferences

The top four preferred destinations were Hawaii, The Caribbean, Western United States and Western Europe. There was a strong preference for the Caribbean and western united states in 2022 than in 2021. Mexico, which ranked low in preference in the 2021 made the top 10 and was the ‘biggest riser” in 2022. The lowest preferred was Southeast Asia, which declined 24 net percent.

When asked to name their ‘ideal’ destination for an incentive trip, 25% of the respondents mentioned Hawaii top-of-mind while Western European destinations also received quite a bit of first mention, particularly France and Italy.

Conclusion

Overall, the research strongly suggests a growing return to normal in incentive travel activity. The destination remains one of the most important components of the motivational appeal of an incentive trip. The study also shows that aesthetic beauty and warm climate, being able to relax and unwind is identified as a high priority for almost 90% of the participants. “As long as there is sun, a luxury hotel, a beautiful beach, the chance to bring along a friend or spouse, and extra spending money to use on the trip, incentive travel experiences are sure to motivate performance for the foreseeable future.”

The Incentive Marketing Association is an organization of providers of incentive merchandise and services dedicated to promoting high standards of professionalism in the incentive and recognition field. The IMA awards honours & recognises outstanding incentive professionals, companies, and programmes within the Incentive Industry. The awards ceremony took place on the 13th July 2022 in Snowbird, Utah.

The award was won for an Incentive programme commissioned by an Insurance company, in which they challenged Uwin Iwin Incentives together with local DMC Walthers to develop and facilitate a once in a lifetime Travel Incentive trip that would be worthy of rewarding its top sales executives. Incentive Travel to the South of France

Travelling again internationally with one of our biggest clients to the South of France – Monaco and Nice was absolutely exhilarating. Our much-loved clients, friends who we have travelled with many times to explore, have an adventure and “kuier” together: a local word for enjoying each other’s company over a meal and a few drinks, so enjoyed stretching their flying wings again to be able to travel internationally.

Travelling with people who have earned the trip by qualifying is also very special as it’s really a celebration of excellence in their own lives, a recognition of that passion and hard work that they get to share with their significant other.

This trip was incredible on all fronts and really shows the Uwin Iwin team’s agility and expertise to deliver during these volatile times. Originally the trip was planned for Sorrento Italy a group of 160 people two hotels and many activities, venues and logistics. But just as Covid would have it, a final wave of infections in Italy had the government close out the destinations to South Africans. They kept telling the team that any day now, the restrictions would be eased up and all would be good, but what if it didn’t?

Time was running out on the planning window for plan B and this had a serious impact on the Visa application processes. The deadline came and we had to switch the programme to another destination, with a similar Mediterranean feel, so Nice & Monaco on the Côte d’Azur was activated.

A quick 5-day site inspection, followed by all the huge number of communications and changes to get to a final established programme, all compounded by guest communications of the new plans and eliciting 160 peoples cooperation in getting Schengen visa applications processed timeously, ramped up the usual high levels of planning stress to a new height.

We did it and client reviews supported an excellent satisfaction index.

  • A classic sports car rally with Porches, Ferrari’s Rolls Royce’s, Mustangs, Shelby Cobra’s and other beautiful wheels to self-drive the coastal alpine region, with magnificent views of the splendid Mediterranean.

  • Leisure days to shop, explore and browse the local food, antique and clothing markets stopping along the way for a coffee and croissant or glass of wine and French cheese.

It’s a known fact that every individual gets motivated when rewarded in some form or other. Businesses across the globe have used incentives to drive employees in order to achieve their objectives. Indian businesses are no different from others and have made use of incentive programmes to yield results. So, if it is evident and easy to do, have all the businesses succeeded in achieving their goals after implementing reward programmes?

The answer is NO, but why is that? 

A business owner looks at a reward programme as an additional expenditure and the employee looks at it as an extra income. The owner views it as the collective budget spent on these rewards and ROI. But each employee views the reward programme from his/her point of view.

Factors like – How much am I getting? How much additional effort needs to be exerted in order to earn a reward? Are the targets reachable? Peer competition to achieve the top reward, the value of the reward itself and the trust for unbiased rewarding– matter for the employee. An incentive programme needs to be designed considering all these factors.

There are businesses that set periodical targets and pay-out rewards to top performers, but in this case, only a few employees who keep winning will get rewarded. A well-designed programme should aim to motivate all employees and not just the top.

Many times, the programme won’t succeed as the focus of the budget is mainly on the reward value and management fails to create a communication medium to connect with the audience. A misconception by some business owners in India is that they feel that employees will only look at the reward and put in all his/her efforts to achieve it. It needs to be considered that over the years, there has been a huge change in employee behaviour. They want a deeper connection with the company they work for and technology has helped them compare their job satisfaction with employees of other companies.

Another reason for a possible failure of reward programmes is because of a frequent disconnect between an organisation and its workforce. We have observed this with many MNCs in India who have a platform to reward the staff, but it is hardly active. Once in a while a few points are added to the employee’s account and are left idle for a significant amount of time. This On & Off attitude fails the whole purpose of motivation and the entire reward programme is termed is essentially termed a failure. However, this can all be avoided, with the clear objectives, the correct communication strategy as well as providing your team with a plethora of rewards that will suit all team members at each level, you will most certainly be off to a good start.

Three more Uwin Iwin team members have received an IMA (Incentives Marketing Association) certification by getting their Incentive Professional Certificate. As industry leaders, we pride ourselves on the development and upskilling of our employees, to provide the very best service to our clients.

The Incentive Marketing Association is the prestigious incentives body who provide incentives, corporate gifts, and related services. The organization is dedicated to promoting high standards of professionalism in the incentive and recognition field, creating greater awareness of incentives. The IP certificate is the first step in achieving the (CPIM) Certified Professional of Incentive Management Designation, a Certification that acknowledges incentive professionals who demonstrate the knowledge and leadership essential to succeed in the incentive industry.

The Uwin Iwin members who now possess this certification are Dora Kabwika, Nobahle Setlogelo, Zandile Manana & Adeshola Ekpo. We asked our team members some questions to find out what this means for them and their professional journey as members of the incentive industry.

IMA-Team

1. What was your reaction upon finding out that you had received this certification?

Adeshola:

I was first relieved and then excited at completing this aspect of my career.

Dora:

I was relieved and glad as did not want to go through the process of writing again.

Nobahle:

I was surprised because I was unsure of how I had done. Having expected the best and prepared for the worst at the same time, I’m pleased to have had a positive outcome.

Zandile:

Receiving the IP certification has increased my confidence.

2. What is the benefit of having this incentive qualification/certification?
Adeshola:

The knowledge the exams provide is a springboard to elevating expertise as an Incentives Management professional. It unveils a wealth of knowledge in Program design, Incentives management and result oriented programs that enhance both my proficiency and skill.

Dora:

Because it is an international certificate there is confidence in knowing that you are recognised as an incentive professional not just in SA. The course also gives you insight into how the industry functions in other parts of the world. 

Nobahle:

The benefit is that the Incentive Professional designation recognises my expertise in the incentive industry and enhances my professional standing in a $90 billion incentive industry.

Zandile:

It’s a benefit in that having received this certification, my knowledge and skills have been sharpened for managing incentive-based accounts and am now a recognised incentive professional in the industry.

3. How will it assist in enabling you to effectively implement incentive programmes for clients?
Adeshola:

My level of know-how definitely got more refined and scaled higher for me after getting qualified as a professional, also the opportunity that lies in networking to bring creative solutions to clients was expanded with a bigger outlook. Knowing the industry is one thing but knowing how to make an impact is another. I can speak to the needs of clients with their voice, diagnose and recommend specific incentive needs that are result-oriented.

Dora:

The course takes through the steps of launching and maintaining a successful incentive programme. How to measure if the incentive programme is affective. This is important because it will me assess what I am offering the client objectively, and assess the success of the programme.

Nobahle:

Because the IP designation helps you stay abreast of the latest industry research, trends and more by way of membership to the Incentive Marketing Association, it helps inform my thinking when it comes to new incentive programme ideas and improvements around existing ones.

Zandile:

Receiving the IP certification has increased my confidence when it comes to incentive planning. It will enable me to make informed decisions when it comes to working with and implementing programmes for clients. I plan to expand my designation in the marketplace and grow even further as a leader in the incentive management space.

As one of the few Incentive industry professionals from Africa to have this certification, our UI teammates are proud of the accreditation and feel that it brings a certain level gravitas to their work and that with it they are confidentially able to seize the budding opportunities in Africa. There is still a gap for Incentives solutions to be practiced in many countries in Africa, and our objective is to create more awareness through rendering professional services built on knowledge and expertise.

My first International trip in 2 years – SITE Incentive Summit Europe 2022.

The excitement was childlike in enthusiasm and expectation as I went to the airport for my 1st international flight in 24 months. I was invited by Swiss Tourism and SITE to attend the European Incentive Summit in Geneva and Montreux – Switzerland as both a hosted buyer and Speaker.

My “Why” for attending this were threefold – Share, Learn and Experience – let me share with you how those played out during the trip.

SITE Incentive Summit Europe 2022

I am so honoured to still be the only African professional to have held the role of SITE global President. Actively involved in both the online incentive rewards and incentive travel world, whose business, designs and implements incentive travel together with global brands and companies. I was asked to share current realities and future trends from an agency perspective for our industry.

Educators

The summit was designed as an immersive experiential event that you can’t achieve online. The event construction itself was a learning point and great to experience as a delegate. Interspersed within the live experience stream were amazing speakers, educators and futurists that facilitated various topics.

Fernando Buscema, an Academic, Speaker, Author and Magician who also designs customer experiences for Ferrari – was also one of the incredible hosts and speakers that was completely unique in his approach to the philosophy of the human experience in design and incentive elements.

As a luxury watch enthusiast – Swiss watchmaking has always fascinated me, so one of the highlights was an Elysium watchmaking experience where participants got to understand the complex mechanics of the movements. Deconstruct and take a watch mechanism apart seeing every tiny piece through watchmaker lenses and then put it all together again. Fantastic experience that can be enhanced for incentives to the stage where winners can construct their very one Swiss watch that is unique to their design and take it home with them.

2020 didn’t prepare us for the unforeseen outlook on industry events, we could have never imagined that Meetings would not hold for 2 years. When ‘Meetings Africa’ was cancelled last year, we had no idea when in future we would be able to attend the next exhibition forum. Fortunately, the day finally arrived in 2022, and for the African MICE Industry, it couldn’t have come sooner.

Meetings Africa took place on the 1-2 March at the Sandton convention Centre. A total of 161 global buyers and 216 exhibitors from 13 African countries attended the flagship event. It’s is one of Africa’s biggest pan-African business events and is a platform where exhibitors such as hotel groups and tourism associations from across the country and continent can represent their services and meet with potential buyers who are looking to host conferences or meetings in Africa.

With a view to expanding the outlook for the events and tourism sector, the Minister of Tourism Lindiwe Sisulu said in an interview, “Opening trade corridors across the continent must also open pathways for intra-African tourism to thrive and vice versa. It is us, the African business events sector that has to be intentional and strategic in ensuring that we leverage this mutual benefit between trade and tourism,” she opined.

Uwin Iwin Incentives was in attendance, and David Sand (CEO) shared his optimism for growth and development in the South African tourism business saying, “It was a joy to attend the Meetings Africa 2022 trade show this week. It was a brave bold move by South African tourism to reboot the industry and a big investment was made to host buyers from around the world. Well done! It was also great to participate in the MICE Master Class as a speaker on the BONday (Business Opportunities Networking Day)”.

He went on to say, “The highlight of the day, was meeting the new Johannesburg Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse. She is a dynamic new leader, a medical doctor by training, and shaking things up in the tough world of politics. Her commitment to business tourism and turning our loved city around was exceptional.”

Shaunelle Mokwena, Senior Account Manager at Uwin Iwin had this to say: “When my 14-year career in tourism came to an abrupt stop in 2020, I had very little hope that our industry would ever recover again.

Now having secured a new role at Uwin Iwin, I’m left with a more optimistic view and since experiencing the energy and enthusiasm of my fellow industry colleagues at the amazing Meetings Africa event The South African Tourism hosted, I am confident that the excitement is shared by all.

She added “As this was the first major industry event since the start of the pandemic, I felt a sense of nostalgia as I reconnected with familiar faces. We, as the industry players, look forward to the anticipated ease in COVID-19 restrictions and once again welcome the world to South Africa.”

 In recent years, the global meetings industry has begun to recognize Africa as a sought-after destination. Meetings Africa was able to showcase Africa’s diverse offering of services and provided a platform where African associations and African meetings industry professionals could forge partnerships that will help transform our continent.

With the world starting to open up, we can continue to put Africa on the map within the global MICE Industry by building and strengthening new relationships as well as showcasing Africa’s unique service offerings.
